Blight Knight is a short NES-style action game that mixes blocking, parrying, dodging, magic, boss fights, and a harder post-clear mode into a compact browser experience. NPJarcade made it in two weeks for NES Jam 2026 and cites Castlevania, Battletoads, and Golden Axe as inspirations. itch.io also tags it Souls-like, but the page is more useful when you look at its actual defensive mechanics instead of relying on the label alone.
The game is marked Released and is playable in HTML5, with a Windows download available. The creator recommends the Windows version for the best performance. The average session is listed at about half an hour, which makes Blight Knight a good choice when you want a complete difficult action game rather than an unfinished prototype.

Can you play Blight Knight in a browser?
Yes. The official itch.io page has a Run game option and an HTML5 build. Soulslike Wiki can load the official itch.io project widget after you choose to load it, while the actual game remains on the creator's page.
The creator explicitly says the Windows version runs best. If the browser build feels slow, inconsistent, or visually odd, use the download rather than assuming the design is at fault.
Keyboard and gamepad support are both documented. The game also has an interactive tutorial listed as an accessibility feature, which helps reduce the amount of trial-and-error needed to learn the inputs.
Keyboard and controller controls
The primary keyboard layout uses WASD to move, G to hold block, H to attack, and Enter or Escape to pause. An alternate keyboard layout uses the arrow keys for movement, Z for block, X for attack, and Enter or Escape for pause.
On a controller, the D-pad moves, B blocks, A attacks, and Start pauses.
Those controls look simple, but the special-move layer adds most of the combat depth. Blocking, parrying, dodging, magic, and dash attacks are all built from a small input vocabulary rather than a large command list.
How parrying works
The creator explains the parry rule directly: block just as an enemy attacks, then follow with an attack to deal extra damage. That creates a classic high-risk timing option. Holding block is safer when you do not know an enemy, while timing the block near impact opens stronger retaliation.
Do not try to parry every attack immediately. Learn which enemy motions are readable, then test the timing. Once you can recognize a predictable attack, parry becomes a way to shorten encounters instead of merely surviving them.
That distinction is important in boss fights, where extra damage after a successful parry can create meaningful momentum.
Dodge and dash attacks
Double-tapping left or right dodges incoming attacks. The creator specifically notes that some projectiles cannot be blocked, so dodge is not optional. This gives defense a clear decision tree: block or parry attacks that can be contested, dodge threats that cannot.
Attacking immediately after a dodge performs a dash attack. The creator describes it as useful for closing distance when an opening appears.
That means dodge is both defensive and positional. You can escape a projectile, then convert the movement into offense if the enemy is recovering.
Magic and MP
Holding attack and block together activates magic. Damage scales with the amount of MP you currently have, according to the official instructions. The creator recommends using magic either to escape a difficult fight or to deal a large chunk of damage during a boss encounter.
The important decision is whether to spend the resource now or preserve it for a more dangerous phase. A player who treats magic as a normal attack may arrive at the final boss with less flexibility.
Because the game is short, you can experiment aggressively on early runs and then refine resource use once you understand the encounter order.
Boss progression and Blight Mode
Blight Knight ends with a final boss called Evil Bone-Whip, Master of the Curse. Beating that boss unlocks Blight Mode.
Blight Mode is not simply a cosmetic New Game Plus. The creator says you have less maximum HP, enemies have more HP, and enemies become much more aggressive. That changes the rhythm of familiar encounters and gives skilled players a reason to replay the short campaign.
If your first run feels manageable, the harder mode is where defensive execution matters more. Blocks that were “good enough” may need to become parries, and slow reactions become more expensive when enemies pressure you harder.
Why Soulslike players may enjoy it
Blight Knight does not advertise bonfires, corpse runs, or an RPG stat sheet. Its Souls-like relevance is concentrated in committed defensive choices and boss learning.
You have multiple answers to danger, and the correct answer depends on the attack. Blocking is different from parrying. Dodging handles unblockable projectiles. Dash attacks reward converting defense into offense. Magic is a resource decision.
That is a meaningful combat overlap even though the overall structure also draws strongly from arcade and beat-'em-up games.
Retro style without retro limitations
The NES presentation is deliberate. The project was built for NES Jam, uses pixel art, and is tagged 8-Bit, Retro, and Beat 'em up. Yet the defensive vocabulary—parry windows, dodge attacks, unblockable projectiles—is much more modern than a simple historical imitation.
This combination is the game's identity. It looks constrained, but it expects active reading and reaction.
If you enjoy low-resolution aesthetics but want more combat nuance than a basic attack loop, Blight Knight is one of the stronger browser options in the current directory.
Browser or Windows?
Start in browser for convenience. If you like the game or encounter performance issues, switch to the Windows version because the creator explicitly recommends it.
Gamepad is also a strong option because the entire combat scheme fits naturally onto the D-pad and face buttons. Keyboard remains fully documented and viable.
